Feminism is one of the media's largest social movements. As of 2017, a poll stated that 69% of teenage girls identify themselves as feminists. So, what is feminism? Most people would identify feminism as the advocacy for women's rights and gender equality. The earliest wave of feminism started in the mid 1800s with the suffragettes. These women advocated for basic rights, such as owning property, and the right to vote. Early feminism focused more on the political side of women's rights, whereas modern, third and fourth-wave feminism is more about the social aspect of women's equality to men. So... if feminism is just about making sure men and women are equal, then why is it unbiblical?Third and fourth-wave feminism (starting in the 90s and continuing through today) focuses on many different issues, including sexuality, gender roles, and abortion. Although these are issues the church also focuses on, the feminist stance on these topics are what make the movement so unbiblical. Sexuality & PromiscuityThe sexual revolution took place between the 1960s and 80s; however, its ideologies still carry into today's modern feminism. Feminists teach women that they should take charge of their bodies, meaning that they should be loud and proud about their sexuality, as well as be proud to show off their bodies. As Christian women, we should reject both of those ideologies, as they are both very contradictory to God's Word. The Bible teaches that when God designed marriage, He specifically placed sex within its boundaries. He does this to protect His children! Sex is not a dirty thing, it's something beautiful that God created; however, outside of His will, it is no longer sacred or special. Sex is an expression of deep, sacrificial love, and binds two people together for life. "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." |
